OK, I am not even close to being an expert on this subject, but here are three tips that I have learned while trying to get my brand going…
1. Talk BIG – This ones pretty simple. Make sure you build yourself or your brand up to be WAY bigger than it really is. No one needs to know that your shipping “warehouse” is 5 feet from your bed. For all they know you could have “warehouses” all over the world! Now the key to this is to use “BIG BOY” terms. What are “BIG BOY” terms you ask? here are a few to get you started “Nationwide”, “Stock Market”, “Dow Jones”, “Dubai”, “Warehouses”, “Yacht”, “Country club”. Now the tricky part is how to use these “BIG BOY” terms in convos you are having with potential clients/buyers. For example: ”blah blah blah.. I was walking my dog “DUBAI” on the “COUNTRY CLUB” Plaza the other day… blah blah blah” Now believe it or not.. but using these words will stand out in your clients head latter on. He/She will not remember your detailed rambling conversation about walking your dog… But what they will remember are these “BIG BOY” terms… YUP…. “Man that Angryape must be doing something right… talking about opening stores in Dubai… and maybe he will take me as a guest to his Country Club if I buy from him!”
2. Carry a Blackberry – or two… actually the more the better! (even If they don’t work, or you happened to drop one and stepped on it while walking in to the garage) You could be “Talking Big” with a potential buyer, and whats really going to sell this shirt is when you pull out your blackberry and act like your checking your stock… but then BAM you pull out a second one to respond to an email. ”Damn this dude looks LEGIT with his two blackberries.. He must be doing something right!” People will take you WAY more seriously when you pull out a blackberry or two.
3. Adapt to “Change” – Ok this could mean two different things… First one: You have to be wiling to accept “change” or what I call “coinage”. Money is Money right? If someone wants to pay for a shirt in Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, and Quarters then you should be able to adapt to accept this currency. After all you can take that “coinage” to the bank and trade it in for some paper rolls right? or if you were REALLY REALLY smart you would take that coinage to a fountain in the mall or on the Plaza and toss them in to make a wish that the next person will pay you in cash/check/or credit card.
2nd meaning – One of the best ways I find to promote myself or my brand is to be a walking billboard. I am constantly “adapting to change”. If I am out on the Plaza and feel that people aren’t taking notice of my “billboard” then ill just reach in to my backpack and throw on another tee design. I will keep doing this until I get noticed… It may take several cycles of doing this, but someone will eventually notice! In this economy you have to be willing to “adapt to change” on the fly!!!
